Hershey......more than just chocolate

Monday, May 16, 2011

Today Dad took Mom and me to Hershey, PA - the "sweetest place on earth" (that's because of all the sugar there).  But, Mom and Dad were really surprised about Hershey the man - Milton was his first name.  He failed so many times, but never gave up and eventually built his chocolate business.  When he and his wife Catherine, couldn't have any children, they open up a boys school and eventually an orphanage.  Then he planned and built the town of Hershey and provided housing, and schools for all his workers.  It was amazing how much this man did to give back to his workers and the community.  Almost the whole town still belongs to the Hershey foundation.  He build houses for his workers and sold the houses to his workers for  $1.00, but when the worker left the house would be sold at market value!  The foundation gets about 10,000 letters a year for kids who don't have a home or their parents can not take care of them to apply to Hershey to go to school.  The foundation accepts about 500 of those kids (after testing, etc.) to come and live in Hershey.  They live in a home with a married couple, have to attend church every Sunday - no exceptions - the boys have to wear a coat and tie, and the girls have to wear a dress or pants suit.  Everything is provided for them - a roof over their heads, clothing, food and when they graduate from high school, they have $80,000 for college!  Amazing what this man has given back.  So, every time you buy a Hershey product, that is where the money is going.
