My First Outing - Death Valley

Hi. My name is Bessy (la poop). I don’t know why my Mom and Dad added the “la poop”…I mean after all what do they expect when they feed me all that dog food. Anyway, my Mom and Dad tell me we are going on a long trip and I should keep a journal, so here it is.

Next Wednesday we are going to pack up in my new travel trailer and take off for the maiden voyage to Death Valley. My Mom and Dad have been spending a lot of time in this thing, sawing, drilling grunting and groaning, doing what they call customizing some things. I don’t really see the point. I mean it has everything the house has, except it’s a little smaller (more my size). The best part is the bed. Once they move in my toys, bowls and food, I’m set to go! I’ll have a queen sized bed, my toys, food and water – what else could you possibly need?

Well, we took off at 3:30pm yesterday (Mom got off work early). We went South on Hwy 395 and headed for Death Valley. It was very windy until we got to Mono Lake – I went there once when I was a puppy. I’m all grown up now – dad took me to see Dr. Matt yesterday and he said I couldn’t gain any more weight – I’m just like Mom and Dad now – on a diet. I don’t know why – I only weigh 40 pounds…

Anyway, we stayed overnight at J Diamond Mobile Ranch. We had all the hookups except cable TV, and that’s because Mom and Dad forgot the cable thing. Guess I’ll have to keep a better eye on them when they pack up. Dad took me for a walk last night after they got back from dinner and I was sniffing around and something got me on the nose, so now I have a swollen nose with a little hole.

Mom said the red stuff was blood! Dad said he will take me for a walk in a bit and mom is heading for the shower, then we will have breakfast and head out to meet Duke and his mom and dad!

My swollen nose - it REALLY is worse
than it looks!
Sitting on Dad's lap -
my nose REALLY hurts!
Well, Mom and Dad decided that my nose was bad enough to have a vet check it out. We went out to the camp site at Panamint Springs and met up with Duke and his Mom and Dad. They had lunch then took me back to Lone Pine, CA to the Vet. He made them leave me there and he gave me a shot and I got REAL sleepy. When I woke up, I was real wobbly and Mom and Dad laughed at me! They picked me up and we went back to camp. I was pretty sleepy so I just sat in dad’s lap. And now Mom shoves this little capsule down my throat. She says it will keep me from getting sick, but those things make me throw up! Dinner was OK though – it was steak night and Duke and I made out with the bones!

This is the really hard couch!
Well we all packed up this morning and went to a place called Stovepipe Wells and set up camp. I’m still not feeling to good – got sick again this morning after mom gave me one of those pills again. We all got into Duke’s rig and went on a long ride. We went to a Ghost Town called Ryolite. They and some really weird “art” work there. Mom took this picture of us on this couch – it was really hard – not at all like the one at home. Then we went to this place called Titus canyon. It was really steep, rough and a little scary with that big rig that Duke’s mom and dad have. Some guy stopped and told us it was going to get worse!

After that, all the moms and dads went to a place called Scotty’s castle. Duke and I stayed in the back of the camper. Mom and Dad said it was a really interesting tour. Mom took lots of pictures of EVERYTHING!

Duke's Rig
We got back to camp late and everybody was ready for dinner and a good night’s sleep. It was Italian night, do Duke and I didn’t get much for left overs.

Scotty's Castle - what a pad!
After breakfast we all packed up again and went to another camp site – this time it was Sunset camp at Furnace Creek. Then we got into our rig and headed out to see more of Death Valley. Mom and Noranne went for a walk out on the alaki flats at Bad Water Basin while dad, Del and Duke and I waited in the truck. When Mom and Noranne came back we took another short ride to Artists Palette and took pictures of the different colored mountains and the flowers we found. Mom was real disappointed because there weren’t too many flowers to take pictures of. After that we went back to camp and just relaxed. Duke and I played for a long time and Mom said I was a dirty little dog – it’s hard to keep clean in the desert!

My Buddy Duke - isn't he handsom?
We all slept in this morning and Del made breakfast – it was really good too, we had scrambled eggs and sausage. When everything was all cleaned up, duke and his Mom and Dad left and we headed for the north end of the park. When we got to Tonopah, Mom and Dad decided to head all the way home. Our trip ended at 7:30 pm and Dad went and got mom some War Won Ton Soup for dinner.

All in all, it was a pretty good trip, except for the Vet visit and those pills.

  1. Happy Trails, Bessy. Take good care of your Mom and Dad and keep your little nose out of the stickers. This is a great idea to have a blog so that we can keep track of your and we can see all the beautiful pictures. Have a great adventure. Love you all.
