Well, it rained almost all of last night, so we weren't too sure what we would wake up to, but it was just cloudy and cool and no rain this morning!  Dad took Mom and I to a place called Mesa Verde, which was just up the road from camp.  It was a real pretty drive because the oaks were all different colors.  When we got to the National Park, a lot of stuff was already closed because it is the end of the season, but by the end of the day, Mom and Dad felt like they saw pretty much all they wanted to see.  Mesa Verde is a place where ancient Indians lived in cliff dwellings and pueblos and we went and saw the ruins.  They obviously didn't have any dogs in those cliff dwellings unless they were REALLY good CLIMBERS!  In some of the cliff dwellings, they had to use ladders and little toe holds chipped out of the sandstone!  It was really interesting to see how those people lived and the Park Service did a good job of letting the public come in and see some of them.  Oh, and Mom found a baby tarantula - ugly thing!  Anyway, here are some pictures.

 Yes, that is snow!  Dad said before we leave here (we will be here for 7 nights) he would take me to the snow and let me play around in it!  It's supposed to snow some more the next couple of days!  I think Mom is ready to find some warmer weather already, but she brought warm cloths, so she will be OK.  Besides, I can keep her warm, especially at night when I snuggle between Mom and Dad in bed!!!  It's a dog's life!  I wonder what today will bring?

Oh, and someone asked Mom about the map...well, Mom is still working on it, but needs to figure out how to update it without having to redo it every time.  She thinks she has figured it out, but we will see.  Another fun fact - we have traveled over 1,370 miles from camp to camp, but have traveled a total of over 3,200 miles running around the country!  There sure is alot to see out there!  Until next time.......

Short Day Today!

Today we got back to camp early, so Mom can tell you about our day.  We started off by going East to Montezuma Creek then on to Aneth.  We found out that they drill for oil here - we could smell it - and, Dad gave Mom and I a lesson on the "pipe still" process to process the oil (we'll have him explain it to you some time).  I was getting a little worried because, by noon, Mom hadn't taken any pictures and Dad hadn't found any dirt roads.  Then they saw a sign that said Hovenweep National Monument.  They looked at each other, shrugged, and off we went.  It went WAY back into the back country (paved road no less).  When we got there we found Little Ruin Canyon.  The buildings were constructed around 1230 to 1275 A.D.  It was really neat because they let dogs go on the trail - it was two miles long and the ranger said it was easy except for the 80 foot drop into the canyon and the hike out of the canyon - he was right.  When we got back Mom went in and told the Ranger that it was a good trail for fat ladies, old men and short dogs......does she mean me?  Anyway, here are some pictures.

Today we moved to Monument Valley.  We had a really cool camp site up in a canyon.  More red rock!!  When we got there, this CAT moved in!  He seemed friendly enough, but first he parked his butt under my steps and THEN he moved up to the table!  He didn't even ask if he could move in!  What nerve!

Well, today was another SUCKY day for me!  Mom and Dad left me in the trailer for the morning and went on another TOUR!!  It seems that if you want to see anything around here (on the Navajo Land) you have to have a guide.  For some reason, they don't let four legged critters on the tours - that SUCKS!  When Mom and Dad came back they were laughing at me because they heard me crying - well - what did they expect??

Anyway, they felt sorry for me and fed me a good lunch - ham, turkey and cheese sandwich bites!  Then we went back to the Visitor center at sunset for Mom to take pictures, but there were too many clouds to get any sunset pictures.  Mom said she took over 300 pictures this morning of all the cool things they saw.  They have names for almost all of the rock formations, so you have to have a pretty good imagination to see what the Navajo see.  (See some of the pictures below.)

Surprise!  We woke up to a rain shower this morning, so Mom decided it was a good morning for hotcakes and sausage - YUMMMM!  It quit raining right after breakfast, so we loaded up and headed to Bluff, UT.  On the way, Mom took MORE pictures of Monument Valley and we also saw a rock they call Mexican Hat!  It really DOES look like a Mexican hat!  After we got all set up at camp, Dad took us on ANOTHER one of his "off road trips" (he always seems to know where to go so Mom can get some great pictures).  We went through a place called the Valley of the Gods.  It had a lot of rock formations that had weird names for them.  Like Mom said, you really have to have a great imagination to see some of these....like 'sitting hen', 'seven sailors', and, 'woman in a bathtub'?  Very strange...

After that we went up a VERY STEEP grade called Moki Dugway, and we could see all the way back to Monument Valley!  WOW, what a view!

Well, that's about it for the last few days.  Mom figured out that we have only gone about 1250 miles from home - from campsite to campsite - but, Dad has driven over 2700 miles total with all of the exploring we have done.  We sure have seen a lot of red rock too!

We will be off to do more exploring today then move again tomorrow - going further East I think?

Let's see.  On this day Dad and I stayed pretty much close to camp and squared away the fishing gear - a lot of good that stuff did us - we didn't get any fish! 



Antelope Canyon!

 Mom left us at camp and went on this really neat tour of a place called Antelope Canyon.  It's what they call a "slot canyon" - it's really narrow, and made from the water erosion in the sandstone.  You can only get in there with a Navajo Guide and Mom said she had a really good one.  He helped her and everyone else out on the tour to take some really cool pictures of this place.  The ride out there was quite an adventure in itself - she road in the back of this truck with seats in it and the road was nothing more that a wash.  They've had some rain here last week when we were on the North Rim, so there was "fresh" sand everywhere.  It's something Mom has always wanted to do, so now she says she can cross this off her list - not that she wouldn't go back given the chance.

Well!!  This day was really sucky for me!!  I ended up staying at a Vet Clinic for the day -
no I'm not sick or hurt - but, Mom and Dad went on this day long float trip down Glen Canyon and said I would be better off here - HA! - (don't they know I like boats too?).  Any way, they started at the Glen Canyon Dam and went down about 15 miles until they got to Lee's Ferry.  Mom took some really cool pictures and she will add them later.  I sure was happy to see them at the end of the day - they BOTH got kisses!!

Today was moving day - we drove to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon - WOW!  Another deep canyon even bigger than the other ones I've seen!  We will see more of it tomorrow.

WOW - what a fun day...I got to go EVERYWHERE Mom and Dad went (even into the museum)!  Mom took tons of pictures and I made a lot of new friends - Tucker was my favorite.  He was just a puppy, but he was real small and he had to stand up on his hind legs (like I do with Duke), to box me around.  A lot of people wanted to take pictures of me too.  Mom said we should charge people to pay for the trip!  It seems (almost) every body likes a Basset hound!  There was this one guy that wasn't very friendly and he nipped at my nose and made it bleed - why is my nose always getting bloody? - guess I should be careful where I put it (ya think, Bessy?).

We must have walked a hundred miles today!  Boy, am I pooped!  (Dad and I are napping as Mom works on this.)  I got to walk out on the edge of the Rim and up on the rock walls so I could see over the edge - I think that made Mom a little nervous - she started to call me a mountain goat (what ever that is).

We also saw Rock Squirrels, a lizard, and some really funny looking plants - Mom got pictures of them all!  Then we saw some really BIG critters.  Dad said they were Elk - they sure are a lot bigger than the deer I see in my front yard. There was a really nice looking buck in the bunch and he sure had a lot of girl friends and kids with him.

This road goes FOREVER!!


Today we went for a ride to Glen Canyon Dam.  It was really cool, but it sure was a long way down to the water!  Like Dad said, the first step is a Lu Lu.  And further down the road we found Dinosaur tracks! Some of them were bigger than me! It was really very interesting and I got to go on a long walk looking at them.



Then Dad took us on another one of his "back road trips".  He started out really good, but ended up on this dirt road that went on FOREVER!  Luckily, there was a guy on the road and he told Dad to keep going and we would eventually come to the highway.  When we got on the highway, we only had 60 plus miles to go to get back to camp...Dad's little drive only took us 6 or 7 hours....

Today Dad rented a boat and we went boating and fishing.  The boating was fun, but the fishing was kinda boring.  Mom said she had a big bite (I guess that's when the fish gets the bait and fisherman (or woman) gets nothing).  Dad said he got a little nibble.  Anyway, I didn't ever see any fish - except the anchovies they were using for bait.
 

Dad stopped the boat at one point to let me out so I could do my business, and when Mom tried to get out of the boat, she slipped and fell in the water!  Dad didn't dare laugh, but I know he really wanted to.  Mom said she was OK, but I think she hurt her shoulder a little bit.  She had her phone in her pocket, but it seems to be OK - thank goodness!

 

There sure are some deep canyons and BIG rocks in the canyons. We only went through two canyons and that took us all day!  Lake Powell is REALLY big!  Dad said there are hundreds of house boats on the lake.  We saw some that were numbered and the numbers went up to 500.

THIS IS A LAKE?

 Mom said we will have to post a few days all at once because she doesn’t have an Internet connection here. She connected with the phone, but the signal is REALLY weak because of where we are and she no sooner connected then it disconnected. We didn’t go very far today, but the scenery changed drastically. We are at Jacob Lake in Arizona – it’s really not more than a puddle – and I’m not kidding!   (Click on the picture to make it bigger, then click your back button to come back to the blog.)

We are in the forest and it’s real pretty and a lot cooler than the desert. They have some really cool squirrels here – they have big reddish brown ears and BIG BUSHY white tails – Mom said she will have to get a picture of one to share with all of you. Mom said we were REALLY ROUGHING it now because we don’t have any TV reception, hardly any cell reception, no Internet and she is all out of RUM! Anyway, we got camp all set up and Mom and Dad were sitting under the awning when there was this BIG BOOM from the sky. It was thunder! Then it started to rain REALLY HARD! We finally went inside and watched it rain for about a half hour or so – Mom said it was “raining cats and dogs” – but I didn’t see any! I think she was hallucinating! Mom got board watching Dad sleep and the rain and decided to make some apple turnovers from some homemade canned apples that she got from Aunt Nori. Boy, do they ever smell good! Anyway, after the rain the sun came out and Mom took me for a long walk while Dad took a nap, then Dad took me for a long walk while Mom sat and read. That’s about it for today. Oh, I forgot – the people next door to us are hunters and are trying to find turkeys, but, they said they haven’t seen any. (I think they are looking in the wrong place because every turkey I’ve seen came from Mom’s oven.) I’m not sure what tomorrow will bring…….

HAIL ON THE PICNIC TABLE!

 Dad took Mom and me on one of his famous back road trips. He said we were going to go critter watching. Unfortunately, we didn’t see ONE critter. Mom really wanted to get the picture of the white tailed squirrel, but we didn’t find any. When we drove into our camp site – what do you think we saw? A white tailed squirrel! Dad drove 100 miles on the dirt roads looking for that silly looking thing, and he was at camp all along! Anyway, he was so fast and so far away, Mom didn’t get him. We had another thunder storm this afternoon – not so much thunder, but a lot of rain – then these little pieces of ICE started to come down – Mom told me it was hail, and if she hadn’t brought me in when she did – I would have gotten beaned! She took a picture of the picnic table and it was covered with the stuff. Guess we won’t be eating outside tonight.

DARK GREY CLOUDS 

 Today we went to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Mom was real worried about getting out of the camp site at Jacob Lake, because we practically jack-knifed the trailer to get in.  Actually they pretty much jack-knife all the units in their sites.  Well, Mom did a real good job in getting us out, with Dad’s help of course, and she didn’t even hit the tree! We got more of that hail stuff while Mom and Dad were hooking up, but it stopped when we hit the road (of course). We got camp set up at the Grand Canyon camp site – and what a great camp site it is – really big and level and everything. Then it started to rain and hail again. We hunkered down for a while and I got all warm and snugly, then Mom and Dad decided they wanted to go for a ride (the rain had subsided). We went to Angel Bright and the canyon looked really cool with the weather coming in.

We are back at camp now and it’s raining again! Mom and Dad both said they will be getting out warmer clothes tomorrow. We are still “roughing it”. Dad said this is a “dry” camp, which means we don’t have any hook-ups – no electricity, no water and no sewer! And, Mom still doesn’t have any TV reception, NO cell reception, no Internet and she is still all out of RUM!

Well, today we drove all around the park and Mom took what pictures she could. It rained almost all day and it is very cold and damp. Mom and Dad are complaining about joints and stuff hurting. Mom said her (broken) arm is not a happy camper. When we were going back to camp, a big buck ran across the road in front of us – he sure was pretty – but too fast for Mom to get a picture. We also saw some does with their fawns. We have also seen some wild turkeys, but they were too far away for pictures also.

Grand Canyon Lodge

 RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY – COME BACK WHEN WE LEAVE!! Still cold and damp and to make matters worse, the furnace in the trailer was blowing cold air this morning! It’s working now, thanks to Dad. He thinks we have a drain on the batteries some place, because we can only run the generator two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening, and of course the solar panels haven’t done us any good, because we haven’t seen the sun for three days. But we are adapting to the generator schedule. We went for a little ride today and found some sunshine at the lodge (but not nearly enough). Mom took a few pictures. Mom and Dad notice that everybody in the Lodge were all bundled up and there were no lights on – come to find out, the whole Grand Canyon is without electricity! There was also a tornado warning, but the warning was for about 70 miles south of us in Flagstaff, AZ. Dad tried to take some back roads again, only to find them blocked by downed trees. The ground is so wet that the dead trees are falling over in the wind. Mom and Dad are going to the Lodge for dinner tonight – they might have a limited menu because of the electricity.

Mom was going to take a shower at the shower house, but it was all locked up because of no electricity. Good thing Dad knows about generators and the such – Mom was able to shower in the trailer, and seems to be in a much better mood now. Lucky me!  Mom and Dad were able to have Prime Rib for dinner and guess what I got????  LEFT OVERS - YEAH!

 The storm seems to be breaking up and Mom got some pictures of a great sunset -too bad the sun is going down - that's the first we have seen of it for a few days...

We will be leaving in the morning and going to Page, AZ. Dad said it should be warmer and dryer there – I think we are all ready to go! Too bad, because from what we have seen, it is really pretty here.

SUNSHINE in the Grand Canyon

Well, we woke up to SUNSHINE today! But, the wind is blowing and it is still very cold. Dad and I took Mom back up the canyon so she could take some pictures of the North Rim in the sunshine. We were only out for about an hour and a half, and then went back to camp to get ready to go. Mom and Dad had the trailer hooked up in no time and we were on the road.

On the way to Page, AZ, Mom asked Dad what the date was and realized we still had a day left at the Grand Canyon! Mom called ahead to Page, and luckily, we will be able to get our camp site a night early. It’s already starting to warm up and we are starting to dry out. When we got to camp, mom called to have our mail forwarded because we are going to be here until October 14, 2010. Mom feels better connected now, because we have Internet, cell service, full hook-ups, including cable TV, and Dad was able to find Mom some RUM! Of course, he found himself some wine too…

I’m not sure what we will be doing tomorrow, but I bet it includes laundry :>(

I know Mom wants to go to Antelope Canyon to take pictures and I think Dad wants to get a boat and teach me how to fish! Sounds like fun to me :>)

Mom and Dad took me to this REALLY COOL place called Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.  they let me run on the dunes and I had a GREAT time!  But, as you can see I ended up with a PINK BELLY!  Mom and Dad thought it was really funny and laughed at me!

Any way - it did brush off and I am back to normal now.  We are staying at Kanab, at the Kanab RV Corral RV Park for a few days before we head down to the the Grand Canyon.  It's really hot here, but it's supposed to cool off in a few days.  We will be going back to Zion today to see if Mom can get some better pictures.

I almost forgot - before we came here we made a little side trip to Kodachrome Basin.  That was really neat too - lots of strange sandstone formations.  Come to think of it - there is nothing but sand and stone in this part of the country!

Bryce Canyon National Park



Today we went to Bryce Canyon National Park. It sure is pretty over there, but the canyons are REALLY deep and REALLY red.

It was very warm, so Dad found this little back road and we went WAY UP into the mountains and Mom took a lot of pictures of the fall colors. It took us a couple of hours to get up there, and then we had to turn around to come back. The GPS said we could keep going down hill, but Dad wasn't too sure about the road.  Oh, and we had a picnic lunch up there too.  See that little white spot on the horizon of the photo at the right?  Those are cliffs and we were right next to them.  That's were Dad took us!

Today we went to Zion National Park.  Mom was real disappointed because they were doing road work and all the pull outs had equipment in them, so she had to take all the pictures from the truck.  Dad found another one of his famous back roads and we went into the high country again.  I got to see cowboys herding SHEEP.  Dad said some dogs make a living doing that.  The only dog I saw was on the back of an ATV - now that looks like FUN!  Mom took more pictures of the colorful trees in the high country and we had another picnic lunch up where it was cool.  We also saw wild turkeys - what funny looking birds - and they play follow the leader!  I bet if one of them jumped off a cliff - the rest would follow!

WHEW - housework is
HARD WORK!



 Mom and Dad did house work today, so I just rested up.  Man, they cleaned EVERYTHING - the trailer, the laundry, the truck and they even got to my ears!  Dad even gave me a pedicure and brushed me too.  Sure glad I have short hair - the dog next door had to have a bath!  He had very long hair and had to be dried with a blow dryer and brushed at the same time - didn't look like any fun to me! 

We will be moving on Monday so not sure if I (Mom) will get time to write much.  We aren't going very far because we are going to go North, (to find cooler weather) and will have to come back South to go to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon - Dad got us reservations (finally) for October 4th through the 8th.

We moved to another camp site today - it's a Utah State Park under construction, but its OK for the night.  They have a petrified forest here.  On the way here we went through the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.  Boy, is there ever a lot of ROCK in this country!

 I also got to see my first cattle drive - those guys are sure BIG, and NOISY.  I don't think they liked being moved along the highway.

OK, Mom added the photos, but will work on the map later.  We are at Ruby's Inn Camp Ground at the entrance to Bryce Nation Park (again).  We are going to stay one night and head south tomorrow and maybe try to get some better pictures at Zion Nation Park.  After a few days there, we are heading South because Dad got us reservations at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon from October 4th through October 8th.

Easy day...

Thursday (September 23rd) was an easy day.  We didn't go very far, but saw some really pretty country - finally got out of that desert.  When we left Cedar City, UT, we went through Cedar Breaks National Monument and they already have fall colors.  Beautiful aspen trees all along the route.

 Mom and Dad have decided to stay here in Hatch, UT, for at least three nites so we can go to Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park.  We may do some other exploring while we are here too.  The weather is really nice - in the 80's during the day, but cool at night - in the 40's.

Mom is still tweaking the map at the right - if you click on the little "-" sign, it will zoom out so you can see our whole route.  Under the map, you can click on "View Bessy's Map in a larger map" to see a bigger map.

Dad is still in bed, but Mom and I are up and ready to go (almost - Mom still needs to get dressed).

We will see what the day brings - more photos I bet!

The Extraterrestrial Highway



WHEW!  What a day!  Things started out pretty quiet and calm.  When we left Tonopah, NV it was cool and partly cloudy.  We headed East on Route 6, then we took the Extraterrestrial Highway (375) down to Crystal Springs, NV.  There wasn't anything too exciting about it until we went past Rachel (nothing at all happening there).  The wind was really blowing and against us, so Dad wasn't too sure about the gas mileage.  The low fuel light came on and we literally coasted into Caliente, NV (not as bad as it sounds - we still had 3 gallons left), and we went and got gas (Dad filled up the extra gas can)!

I learned three things today: #1:  When Dad says something about "Low Flying Aircraft" not being around - DON"T believe him!  Dad had no sooner said something to Mom about that, when that thing when ROARING past mom's side of the truck and scared the heck out of her and me (I was snoozing)!  Then Dad spotted something running up the road and it was #2: Antelope.  Dad said one of them was a pretty nice buck (what ever that is).  Mom took pictures as they stood on the side of the road. 

Then we got stopped for some road construction and while Dad and I were talking to some truckers there was this #3: REALLY BIG BOOM AND THE GROUND SHOOK!  Mom said it was a sonic boom and it was nothing to be scared of.

After lunch we took another short drive and went to the town of Panaca, NV.  Dad found this little park for me to play in and across the street was "Chase".  His Dad let him come over and play with me for a while and we did a lot of running - I think Mom and Dad were trying to wear me out??

Then we went to this place called Cathedral Gorge State Park - they had some really funny looking sandstone formations - any way that's what Mom called them.

Well, that is it for today.  Tomorrow we will head East again.  Mom said she is going to work on getting a map posted on the blog so you all can see where we have been.  When you see the map, it is "interactive" which means you can zoom in and out and all that technical stuff.  Hope it works OK.  Let mon know how you like it.

Bessy Has Left the City!

Workin' out the kinks!

Well, we FINALLY got on the road.  We have been at the Comstock RV Park in Carson City for the last week "working out the kinks".  As you can see, it is very hard work to work on those "kinks".

On the way out of town, we had to stop at DJ's to get our tail light fixed - we burnt out the bulb - so they were real nice and fixed the burnt one and gave us a spare.

Oh heck!  Our Internet connection isn't too good here, so Mom will have to upload the pictures later.  We made it all the way to Tonopah, NV today - a whopping 230 miles!  Mom and Dad made a rule that I couldn't go any farther than 400 miles in one day, but we stopped here because it was convenient.  The "camp site" isn't anything to brag about - just a parking lot behind the Ramada - but it has hookups and lots of sage brush around to sniff.  There wasn't much to see between Carson City and Tonopah, but while Dad was driving, Mom and I thought we saw a Jack Rabbit with a canteen around his neck!

Tomorrow we are going to Caliente, NV - more sage brush I bet - and maybe more of those poor Jack Rabbits.

All our STUFF in boxes

Well, there certainly have been a lot of changes around here.  Mom and Dad packed EVERYTHING, and what they didn't pack went outside and a bunch of people came over and gave Mom money and took stuff home with them. I guess they call that a Yard Sale.  Mom and Dad seemed pretty happy about that and I had fun because everybody made a fuss over me and I got some donut holes!

On September 2nd, my buddy Duke came to visit, and his Mom and Dad helped my Mom and Dad pack and move stuff around.  Duke and I just played the whole time they were here - Mom even let Duke come in the house to sleep (he has to stay outside when he is at home).  They took some stuff (mostly fresh halibut) and put it in their camper and then they left.

Lots of people had dinners for Mom and Dad and they said they really appreciated every one of them because they were soooo tired.  I got to go to one of the dinners last week and they had two little dogs and we ran and played the whole time - boy was I pooped when I got back to camp - I slept through the night and most of the next day.

On Labor Day (I guess that is a holiday), two men came to the house an started taking all the boxes out of the house and put them in a big truck.  The only bad thing about that is they took the bed and I had to lay on the FLOOR in the bedroom to take my sunbath!  Then we moved out into the trailer to sleep, but Mom and Dad took showers and made coffee in the house.  Oh, and Mom's job ended on September 10th, so she is home all the time now.

THEN, three ladies came and cleaned everything and two days later two guys came and cleaned the carpets!  I'm not so sure I understand what is happening here, but it seems like we spend more time in the trailer now.

Last night, Mom and Dad left me in the trailer because they had to give the keys to the house to the lady that is moving in - so Mom said we are officially "homeless" and "on the road".  We moved the trailer this past Monday, (September 13th), to a RV park in Carson City.  Mom and Dad said we are going to stay here until next Monday, September 20th, and then we are going to take off for real because Mom and Dad are still "tweaking" our little home on wheels and fixing up a few things.  Mom says she needs to get the inside straightened up a little more, and Dad says he needs to get some things done on the outside.  It looks like we will be moving out on Monday and heading for the Bristle Cone Pine Forest first then I will put my nose back to the ground and find the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  (This weekend we will be going to the Basque Festival in Carson City.)

We noticed that a few of you are following along with this adventure, and hope you are enjoying these little stories.  We really enjoy reading your comments - so keep it up!!  Hopefully they will get more interesting as we move along.
